Meet Indiana Jones all over again in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' at Loft
No matter what kind of big-screen, surround-sound system you have in your living room, some movies are most enjoyed in an actual movie theater.
"Raiders of the Lost Ark," one of the greatest popcorn movies ever made, is just the sort of rampaging lark that's even more thrilling in the company of others along for the ride.
In honor of the film's 25th anniversary, the Loft Cinema will screen the Steven Spielberg flick at 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday as part of its Late Night Cult Classics series.
Spielberg's breathless homage to Saturday matinee serials became the highest-grossing movie ever for Paramount Pictures, and although it was followed by two other Indiana Jones adventures, it remains the best.
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" should look dandy, as well. The Loft will unspool a brand-new 35 mm print for the occasion.
TSO season opening with 'Pure Rhapsody'
"Pure Rhapsody' seems an apt description for any evening that includes big, professional performances of George Gershwin music.
And when you've got Alain Lefèvre at the piano, with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra surrounding him, well, it's hard to imagine a more purely pleasurable evening out.
The audience at the Tucson Music Hall, 260 S. Church Ave., will be in good hands at 8 tonight and Friday night, that's for sure.
Lefèvre has passed this way before, including a November 2004 performance with the TSO in which he had his way with André Mathieu's Concerto de Québec.
He'll be all over Gershwin this time around.
It's the season opener for TSO, and tickets are $14-$47. Call 882-8585.
The boys are back for 10th year
My how time flies when you're having fun watching a cartoon that so consistently and so humorously skewers pop culture and all that it has wrought.
Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman return Wednesday night for the 10th season of "South Park" on Comedy Central. Although not as consistent as "The Simpsons," nor as ambitious, the series has lavished us with more wicked humor and flat-out funny moments than practically any other television comedy.
And to whet your appetite for the season opener, Matt Stone and Trey Parker have handpicked their 10 most-beloved episodes to appear on the new "South Park the Hits: Volume 1" DVD. It hits stores Tuesday, to which we can only say: Sweet!
'Nightfall: Dark Asylum' at Old Tucson Studios
If you grew up around here, you might have a tendency to take Old Tucson Studios for granted. Isn't it just a place to send your out-of-town visitors, especially those visiting from Germany or Japan?
Maybe, but every October, it's more than that. The theme park becomes the setting for "Nightfall," a Halloween-themed extravaganza that's usually spooky, cheesy, creative and a whole lot of fun. In short, not a bad way to spend a cool evening under the stars. It starts Saturday.
Surprising 'Six Degrees' looks like an ABC winner
While it's always dangerous to pronounce a television show worth watching based solely on the season premiere, here goes: The slick, soulful and beautifully acted "Six Degrees" is worth watching. It's about the mysteriously connected lives of six very different New Yorkers. One can only hope that the series can maintain its initial level of intrigue.
The second episode airs tonight at 9 on ABC. If you missed last week's premiere, you can watch it online for free at ABC.com.
