Q&A on the News

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 09.23.2006
Question: How much of the oil coming through the Alaskan pipeline from the North Slope is consumed domestically?
Answer: In a previous Q&A, a representative of the Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. in Anchorage said all the oil transported through the Alaska Pipeline goes to West Coast refineries and is consumed domestically.
After refining, some is returned to Alaska to supply energy for Alaskans. Alaska produces nearly 1 million barrels of crude oil a day.
In March, more than 200,000 gallons of oil leaked from a 34-inch pipeline that crosses the Alaska tundra.
A resulting partial shutdown took 200,000 barrels of oil off the daily market.
But since it didn't have to completely shut down the pipeline, supply wasn't heavily affected, and refiners found other sources.
