Council awards contracts for Wi-Fi, La Cañada work
The Sahuarita Town Council on Saturday unanimously awarded contracts for a municipal wireless Internet-access system and the next phase of the La Cañada Drive improvement project.
The $282,522 contract to develop a design for the Wi-Fi system — which would provide high-speed access to the Internet to any user in town with a properly equipped computer — was awarded to Hewlett-Packard Services.
Once the company designs the system, the town will be able to estimate its cost, Town Manager Jim Stahle said.
Town officials hope to have the system running by mid-2007, Stahle said.
The council also approved awarding a $5 million contract to Granite Construction for the next phase of improvements on South La Cañada Drive, between Anamax Mine and Duval Mine roads.
The council usually meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at the Anamax Park Recreation Center, 17501 S. Camino de Las Quintas, but it met Saturday because of schedule conflicts. The next meeting is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 9.
For more information, call the Town Clerk's Office at 822-8801.

Federal agency retiree elected to national post
Nathaniel Brown of Vail has been elected to a national post with the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association.
On Sept. 13, Brown, 75, was elected national secretary during the association's biennial convention in Albuquerque.
He said his responsibilities will include maintaining nationwide membership rolls for the association's 1,500 chapters, representing more than 5 million retired federal workers.
The organization works to protect the rights and benefits of the country's active and retired federal workers.
Brown, who also is president of the association's Arizona organization, worked for the federal government for 32 years, mainly with the Office of Personnel Management in Washington, D.C. He has been an association member for 18 years, he said.

Septic system alternative will be workshop topic
The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality will offer a free workshop on alternative on-site wastewater-treatment systems for homes.
The systems are used on properties that can't accept a conventional septic system and aren't connected to a public sewer system.
The workshop will be held in two sessions, beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 3 in the Public Works Building's basement conference room, 201 N. Stone Ave.
The workshop is for potential property owners, real estate agents specializing in land sales, engineers, builders and others who want to learn about wastewater issues. County Environmental Quality officials also hope it will reduce time spent by staffers, engineers and property owners during the planning and review process.
For more information, call the Environmental Quality office at 740-3340.
