In response to the Sept. 7 editorial "Politicians, sadly, use national loss for political gain."
The blind defense by Republicans of President Bush and his policies is the partisanship that is destroying America
Our nation's safety and most importantly our nation's soul are seriously jeopardized when any president, Republican or Democrat, willfully breaks the Geneva Conventions, subverts justice by running secret prisons and detaining people indefinitely, illegally spies on American citizens, fixes intelligence and facts to fit policy, and uses lies and deceptions to create support for a deadly war.
We cannot fight injustice with more injustice; we cannot fight terrorism with torture. Republicans need to place nation above party; Democrats need to place courage above pollsters' cautions and work together to impeach George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzales and any other administration figures involved in subverting the rule of law and ultimately the struggle against terrorism.

In response to the Aug. 29 guest opinion "Buffelgrass criticism is misguided; plant's benefits receive short shrift."
Sonoran Desert Weedwacker volunteers are committed to the protection of high priority Sonoran Desert. Buffelgrass has been dug out from Tucson Mountain Park year-round for the last six years, effectively controlling this aggressive African grass in large tracts of scenic saguaro-palo verde habitats. Buffelgrass is removed from the sites so that native plants can recolonize the invaded spaces.
Buffelgrass thrives along roadsides, but large stands have also been removed from washes and steep south-facing mountainsides. Areas where dense buffelgrass was removed in 2001 now support native grasses and wildflowers. Over 5,000 acres have been cleared in TMP, and another 5,000 acres are targeted for eradication. Volunteers can help protect the Sonoran Desert; join us at anps@aznps.org.

In response to the Sept. 7 article " 'Buddy-punching' of timecards is OK, union backers tell council."
This was theft and should have been grounds for immediate censure and/or termination of all who were involved in this practice. It appears a time study is needed for this agency.

In response to the Sept. 7 article " 'Buddy-punching' of timecards is OK, union backers tell council."
I really don't know where to begin; I find the whole story quite comical. If the practice of buddy punching had been OK'd by supervision, the supervisors in all of these departments should be shown the door and new policies should be implemented.
Of course the workers who were getting their time cards punched aren't going to complain until confronted by a supervisor or department head. Then they will just say "he told me to do it" or "he said it was OK" as soon as the employee gets caught.
But what I find most amusing is that the national rep for the AFL-CIO said "these people are just very good at their work. . . . I don't see why they can't go home." You're kidding me, right? You mean to tell me that if they finish their assigned work in six hours, let them go home and pay them for eight? How about finding another task to do? How about asking your supervisor for another job assignment. You're kidding me, right?
