OAKLAND, Calif. — Boston ace Curt Schilling became the 14th pitcher in major-league history to reach 3,000 strikeouts Wednesday when he fanned Oakland's Nick Swisher in the first inning of a 7-2 loss.
The 39-year-old Schilling allowed a leadoff double to Jason Kendall before getting Swisher swinging for the milestone strikeout.
"It's very bittersweet," Schilling said after Boston lost its sixth straight game and 12th in 14. "This definitely was a day when this team needed a chance to step up, and I didn't."
● Red Sox slugger David Ortiz will remain in a Boston hospital until today as a precaution and for further tests on his heart.
Ortiz felt heart palpitations earlier this month, and again before Monday's game in Oakland, where he was a late scratch from the lineup. He then returned to Boston for evaluation.
16-inning affair delays anniversary
LOS ANGELES — If Dodgers manager Grady Little had planning a cozy, post-game dinner with his wife to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary, the best they could do was breakfast at one of those all-night joints.
In a game that lasted 4 hours 54 minutes, Ramon Martinez homered leading off the 16th inning as Los Angeles beat Cincinnati 6-5 early Wednesday morning.
The Dodgers have played 14 or more innings on five occasions this season, and this was the first time they emerged with a win.
A total of 461 pitches were thrown; the Dodgers used 20 players and the Reds 22.
Soriano leaves Seattle hospital
SEATTLE — Mariners reliever Rafael Soriano was released from a hospital Wednesday, less than 24 hours after being hit in the head by a line drive.
Doctors said the right-hander sustained a mild concussion when Angels slugger Vladimir Guerrero hit an eighth-inning liner that struck Soriano just behind his right ear Tuesday night. Soriano had an X-ray and two CT scans that revealed no fractures or internal swelling of the brain.
Inside pitch
● Miguel Cabrera of the Florida Marlins was removed from Wednesday night's game against the Cardinals after getting hit by a pitch on the left forearm in the third inning.
● Minnesota lost leadoff hitter Luis Castillo to a sprained right ankle in the sixth inning of Wednesday's game against Kansas City.
● Marlins manager Joe Girardi returned to the club Wednesday. He missed Tuesday's game to be with his pregnant wife and wait out bad weather from Tropical Storm Ernesto.
● St. Louis catcher Gary Bennett sprained his lower back while stretching to make a tag at the plate and left Wednesday night's game against Florida after two innings.
● Cardinals left-hander Mark Mulder, hammered in a pair of starts since coming off the disabled list, believes he probably will not pitch again this season because of shoulder problems.
