Maricopa County is expected to implement tough new policies to control fine particulates like dust after failing to improve air quality to meet federal standards.
The county already has failed to meet Environmental Protection Agency air-quality standards this year for dust pollution, racking up 29 days of high pollution advisories. The county is only allowed three per year by the EPA.
Air-quality officials expect the EPA to declare the county out of compliance with air quality standards in December, triggering the stricter measures.
"It means we need to tighten the ropes," said Holly Ward, a Maricopa County Air Quality Department spokeswoman.
