A 19-year-old woman was killed Thursday night when she was thrown from an all-terrain vehicle on the Southeast Side.

Elena Nicosia was riding the ATV along the dirt shoulder of East Escalante Road at South Pure Paint Trail, near South Old Spanish Trail, when she hit a rough patch, said Deputy Dawn Barkman, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.

The ATV rolled and threw Nicosia, Barkman said. The woman was not wearing a helmet.

Nicosia, who lives in the area, was taken to University Medical Center, Barkman said. She was later pronounced dead.

Investigators believe speed was a factor in the wreck, Barkman said.

Nicosia was riding alone and there were no other injuries, Barkman said.
