Volunteers with the Tucson-based group No More Deaths on Saturday once again will open a round-the-clock camp to help illegal entrants in distress.
The group also plans a presence at shelters and medical clinics in northern Mexico this year, members announced at Southside Presbyterian Church on Wednesday.
No More Deaths is a biblically-based program that offers food, water and medical aid to illegal entrants. Last summer, entrants were dying in the desert heat daily.
The Ark of the Covenant camp, as volunteers call it, is based in Arivaca and has operated for two summers. Volunteers typically live there for a week at a time to provide 24-hour monitoring of Southern Arizona's borderlands.
Volunteers at the camp will go on daily search-and-rescue excursions looking for migrants who are crossing into Arizona by foot. The camp is expected to be open until Labor Day.
About 300 people volunteered at the camp last year. At least 500 are expected this summer.
