Cloudcroft, N.M.
The Lincoln National Forest may be largely closed to the public because of extreme fire danger, but the communities of Cloudcroft, Ruidoso, Mayhill, Sacramento, Weed, Timberon, Capitan and Queen remain open for business, the New Mexico Tourism Department wants you to know.
The Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce, for example, recently announced there's no impact on events such as the 29th Annual Mayfair Juried Art Show in Zenith Park next weekend (May 27-28) and the Melodramas at the Open Air Pavilion (May 26-28).
Cloudcroft, at an elevation of 9,000 feet in the Sacramento Mountains, reaches an average high temperature of about 75 degrees in the summer. It's about a five-hour drive from Tucson, with a variety of lodging and shopping.
Federal authorities recently closed most of the forest, the birthplace of Smokey Bear, because of the fire danger caused by the dry, mild winter.
