Three deputies with the Pima County Sheriff's Department have won awards in law enforcement competitions, officials announced Wednesday.
Deputies Alvaro Arizpuru and Michael Buglewicz took first place in the "pair ride" contest at the 10th Annual Southwest Police Motorcycle Training and Competition in April. The deputies rode motorcycles through an obstacle course while tied together with an 18-inch cord. The event was a fund-raiser for Special Olympics.
Buglewicz, 40, is a 13-year veteran of the department and has been a motor officer for nearly nine years. Arizpuru, 33, has been with the department nearly six years, including two years with the motorcycle unit.
In another honor, Deputy Jakob Nixon, along with his dog, Duco, placed second for "toughest dog" and third in "area searches" at the Fourth Annual Desert Dog Police K-9 Trials in Mesa, also in April. Nixon, 33, has been with the department nearly seven years.
The Sheriff's Department K-9 unit as a group placed third in the "detection" category.
