Oracle
Celebration of new 'helispot' to include barbecue, music
The Oracle Fire Department will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of its "helispot," where helicopters can land to pick up patients in medical emergencies.
The helispot will help in getting patients from rural Oracle to hospitals in a matter of minutes instead of nearly an hour.
The ceremony is planned for noon on May 13 at the helispot, 1470 N. Justice Drive, off American Avenue. The event will include a barbecue, a disc jockey and the presentation of Oracle's National Firewise Community award. The celebration is free.
Oro Valley
Motorcycle cops win awards
Motorcycle officers with the Oro Valley Police Department took home several awards in the 10th annual Southwest Police Motorcycle Training and Competition.
This is the ninth year Oro Valley has taken part in the competition, which was held April 21 and 22 in Phoenix.
In the overall competition, Oro Valley took first and second place. In the team competition, Officer Zach Pierce took first place, Rick Trevizo took second, Matt Horetski took third, Gregg Burgess took sixth, Sgt. John Teachout took seventh and Officer Robert Lolmaugh took 10th. In the riding-pair competition, Officers Chris Palic and Burgess took third.
"We're very pleased and very proud of how well these officers do," Police Chief Danny Sharp said. "This is indicative of how well they ride when they are on the job. Motorcycle skills are perishable skills that have to be maintained, and these guys are diligent in their practice and in maintaining their skills."
Talent roster needs sign-ups
The Greater Oro Valley Arts Council is looking for local talent in all professions and disciplines as it develops a performing-arts roster.
The roster will be used by the council when it selects acts for festivals, concerts and other community events.
Call 797-3959 or go to www.govac.org for an application or more information.
Remodeling at police HQ mandates different entrance
The Oro Valley Police Department headquarters is being remodeled, requiring use of a different entrance, said Liz Wright, department spokeswoman.
The work is expected to continue through mid-July. The public is asked to enter through the north lobby instead of the main entrance, which is closed, Wright said. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
Ballet Folklorico at park
The Greater Oro Valley Arts Council will present the second event in its Riverfront Park Performance Series at 7 p.m. Sunday.
The performance, at Cañada del Oro Riverfront Park, 551 W. Lambert Lane, features Ballet Folklorico de Arizona, and admission is free. Concert-goers can bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic dinners. The performance begins at sunset and will last 60 to 90 minutes.
Marana
Methodist services at school
The Sanctuary United Methodist Church in Marana has moved to a new home at Quail Run Elementary School, 4600 W. Cortaro Farms Road, with its new pastor, the Rev. Mark Maddox.
The school will be a temporary home for the church's members until their permanent house of worship can be built. The congregation is looking for a site and hopes to have the new church built within two years.
The congregation's rapid growth prompted the church to move from its former location to one that could accommodate more people, Maddox said.
Services are at 9:30 a.m. Sundays.
Bid to recall council fails
David Morales, a leader of a citizens group trying to recall the Marana Town Council, addressed the council Tuesday night and said he failed to gather enough signatures to move forward with the recall.
Members of Alliance Marana, the group that organized the recall, started their effort early this year to overturn the town's new water rate structure and because, they said, the council suffers from "group think."
"I don't know how you guys are going to join the town, but there's no heartbeat," Morales said to the council.
"We do have a heart, and we show it every day," Mayor Ed Honea said later in the meeting.
