The filming of Stephen King's "Desperation" in December 2004 brought back slivers of Tucson's old movie-making excitement, with crowds of spectators gathering Downtown and an unexpected blaze near the Tucson Convention Center.
Now, the Fox Theatre is trying to recapture some of the glitz and glamour of bonafide Old Hollywood with a premiere of the movie Saturday night.
The last time a film premiered at the Fox was in 1961, when the Maureen O'Hara flick "The Deadly Companions" screened, according to Herb Stratford, executive director of the Fox Tucson Theatre Foundation.
About 6:30 p.m. Saturday, the theater will set up a red-carpet walk for the stars of the movie, including "Hellboy" actor Ron Perlman, Steven Weber and Annabeth Gish, who are expected to attend.
In homage to King's reputation as one of the rulers of the horror genre, the theater plans to decorate for the mood. Stratford wouldn't give tons of details, but he did say there will be live rattlesnakes, safely enclosed, of course.
"But, obviously, we're not going to do a lot of crazy stuff to our beautifully restored theater," he said.
There's no dress code for the event, but, based on recent events, the staff expects some attendees to show up in finery. For last month's Bollywood event, some movie-watchers clothed themselves in full Indian regalia.
An audience Q & A will follow the three-hour screening, which is scheduled to start around 7:15 p.m.
The movie, parts of which were filmed in Tucson and Bisbee, is slated to air on KGUN-TV Channel 9 on May 23.
No other premieres at the Fox are scheduled at this time, but Stratford said he'd like to have three or four a year.
Tickets are $25 at the Fox Theatre box office. For information or a schedule of events, log on to www.foxtucsontheatre.org or call 624-1515.
