Alarmed by rising smoking rates among young adults, the state health department has awarded a $100,000 grant to the University of Arizona to figure out how to reverse the trend.
Although smoking rates have declined nationwide in recent years, the anti-smoking message is not getting through to the 18-to-24-year-old age group. That is especially true among young adult workers, who smoke more than college students do, studies show.
The grant — to the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health — will fund telephone interviews with young adult smokers and former smokers in Arizona to try to determine the best way to inspire the group to quit smoking, said Merrill Eisenberg, the UA assistant professor of public health who will oversee the year-long study.
Using that information, the state's Tobacco Education and Prevention Program will design anti-tobacco campaigns and smoking-cessation programs that target young adults, Eisenberg said in a statement.
