Replies from students at Sahuarita High School

Two New York high schools recently canceled proms because some students were too extravagant in their prom plans. Last week students at Sahuarita High School were asked about their prom plans and how much they expected to spend.
"I plan on going to prom with a group of friends. I don't usually spend excessive amounts on prom. I usually spend around $140 for a dress and cosmetics. I don't like to spend a lot on prom. I feel you can be just as glamorous for half the price."

"My friends and I are going to Olive Garden for dinner. I'm using an old dress, old shoes and old jewelry. My family is helping with my hair and makeup. Basically, all I'm spending money on is my ticket and gas money and the dinner. I don't particularly want to go to prom, but my sister bullied me into it."

"I am in a Hummer limo with 17 other people. I intend to spend about $300. The reason I'll be spending this amount of money is because it includes the cost of the dress, limo, meal and any other extra costs. Three hundred dollars is a very low cost compared to what other students are spending."

"I plan to not go to the prom. It is too expensive and why spend so much when you can just make a small party with your friends."
