Homes sought for Kazakh visitors
For three weeks in April and May, Tucsonans have a chance to "go global" without ever leaving their home. A group of 10 young adults from Kazakhstan, ages 20-28, will visit Tucson as part of the Community Connections program.
Volunteer home hosts are needed for the three-week period.
Hosts are expected to provide lodging, most meals and occasional transportation. Orientation and staff support are provided throughout the program. Guests will spend most weekdays in professional visits and meetings, and will also have some evening meetings.
The Community Connections program, sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development and administered by World Learning, is designed to promote public diplomacy through the exchange of cultural ideas and values. It seeks to establish links with communities in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
Locally, the program is administered by International Training and Consulting.
With this particular group, there is a special focus on recruiting new families and individuals willing to share their homes, ITC director Nancy Stanley wrote in a press release.
Anyone interested in serving as a home host or receiving more information should call Stanley at 296-4389 or e-mail her at tucsonhomehosts@earthlink.net.
Students compile stories on Hispanics' plant use
Students from Sahuaro High School, paired with Hispanic elders, will record stories of how famiIies in this region use their home gardens.
The Gardens' Heritage Plants Intergenerational Project started in January and runs through December.
Special-education students from Sahuaro High School meet at the Tucson BotanicalGardens with seniors from El Pueblo Senior Center. The next session is scheduled for 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Each session will start with a walk in the gardens to evoke memories and sharing of stories. The students then will collect those memories in writing and on tape recordings. Spanish translators will be involved in the interviews for some of the Spanish-speaking seniors.
The stories will be compiled in a booklet and be made available to the public at a later date.
The project is supported by the Arizona Humanities Council, The Stocker Foundation and the Elizabeth Read Taylor Foundation.
