Tortolita Junior High wins wrestling meet
Tortolita Junior High School's wrestling team, fresh off its state championship last month, dominated competition last weekend at the Flowing Wells Junior High Invitational.
Tortolita scored 257 points, far outpacing runner-up Wilson (158) and third-place Coronado K-8 (138).
The Cougars' win was aided by three first-place individual finishes. Justin Rascon won the 83-pound division, Jacob Pierce was victorious at 154 pounds, and Aaron Andrade took home the 240-pound division crown.
Tortolita's wrestlers also had six second-place finishes.
Wilson had four individual winners: Kyle Webb at 88 pounds, Scott Filbert at 111, Greg Chandler at 125, and Taylor Heidenreich at 167.
Tortolita coach Mike Tinghitella said his team's junior-high state title, which capped a 17-0 season, was the first by a Tucson-area school since 1993.
