A handsome horse named Gulliver and many of his friends are hoping to see you on Saturday at the second annual fund-raiser for the rescue and rehabilitation of horses.
Equine Voices Rescue & Sanctuary is sponsoring the event from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Horse Haven Equestrian Center, 4885 S. Houghton Road. The event is free and includes horse-related presentations on natural horsemanship and healing, entertainment, booths, silent and live auctions, raffle drawings, tack sales and food.
"There will be a huge assortment of things that are of interest for everybody, even if they're not into horsey stuff," said Carol Grubb, events coordinator for Equine Voices.
Artwork by local artists such as Diana Madaras will be for sale, and country singer Andy Hersey will perform.
Equine Voices is dedicated to saving mares and foals used in the manufacture of Premarin and Prempro, female hormone-replacement drugs derived from pregnant mares' urine, as well as abused and neglected horses and animals from pony-skin leather industries.
"If the horse can't be sold into homes, they are probably going to be slaughtered," Grubb said of the mares and foals.
About 100,000 horses were slaughtered in the United States last year, said Grubb. The meat was then sold overseas to countries where horse meat is considered a delicacy.
