Kappa Alpha Psi alumni raise scholarship funds
The Tucson-Sierra Vista Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi hosted the fraternity's ninth annual Kappa Night at the Theatre Feb. 3 at the Temple of Music and Art.
The fund-raiser, which will help support those seeking a higher education, drew about 120 people dressed in red and black formal attire and crowns (hats) of many shapes, sizes and colors.
Every year, the fraternity dedicates the proceeds of its fund-raisers to the following year's scholarship fund. The scholarship winners can use the awards for any education-related expenses.
Last year's scholarship recipients were Anais Downs, attending Clark Atlanta University; Aiyana Wells, Clark Atlanta University; Rakeysh Hardin, Dillard University; Khameil Smith, Pima Community College; and Oscar Pulgarin, University of Arizona.
"Many of our scholarship winners have gone on to successful institutions and become successful citizens thanks to Kappa supporters," said chapter president Ken Oden.
After the reception and the announcement of the scholarship winners, guests attended a performance of Arizona Theatre Company's "Crowns," followed by a "crowns" contest for the best hats and a meet-and-greet with the cast.
Crowns winners were Tillie Russell, Esther Sharif, Gladys Ahmed, Joyce Johnson, Suzetta Jackson, Cassondra Davis, and Myra Robinson.
The event raised about $3,000 for next year's scholarships.
Theatergoers included Joe White, Constance Carr, Rosa A. Williams, Anna Richards, Patrick and Sylvia Simmons, and Pamela Busch.
Home builders group helps homeless youth
The Southern Arizona Home Builders Association Membership Committee presented Youth On Their Own with $3,950 in gift cards and prizes at a holiday party Dec. 13 at the Savoy Opera House.
Student Advocate Noni Garcia accepted the gifts — including gift cards to Target and Wal-Mart, DVD players, CD/alarm clocks and CD players — for the organization that helps homeless youth obtain high school degrees through financial assistance, basic needs and guidance.
The gifts were donated by about 130 association members, staff and their families.
Among those who attended were Patrice Ross of Oracle Ford Mercury, Doug Tidaback from the Arizona Jazz Academy and Richard White of the American Red Cross.
St. Luke's Home event raises about $2,500
St. Luke's Home hosted a patio reception and recital Jan. 22 in celebration of the completed Phase I restoration of St. Francis Chapel, located on St. Luke's grounds.
Originally designed by Josias Joesler and dedicated in 1933, the chapel is used by residents of St. Luke's, a nondenominational home for the elderly, and for weddings and funerals.
The recital featured harpist Patricia Harris, and soprano Anna Schoff, accompanied by pianist Dean Schoff.
Attendees included Margaret Kordsiemon, president of St. Luke's Board of Trustees; Gilda Dick, president of St. Luke's Board of Visitors; Joanne Bennett, president of the Chapel Committee; and Ralph Comey, one of the restoration architects.
Refreshments servers included Frances and Roberto Moore, Pete Mayer, Betsy Iventosch Babb and Frank Babb, Carolyn and James Corrigan, and Ruth Ann Duncan.
The event raised about $2,500 toward the Phase II reconstruction, which will include replacing the windows and doors of the chapel.
