MEXICO CITY — A group of Mexicans have launched their own version of the U.S. Rock the Vote campaign to persuade young voters, who have proven to be as apathetic as their U.S. counterparts, to participate in the July 2 presidential election.
Named "Tu Rock es Votar" or "Your Rock is to Vote," the campaign will bring together a range of entertainers including rockers Fobia, Latina pop diva Paulina Rubio and more traditional Mexican musicians such as Los Tigres del Norte, organizers said in a Tuesday news conference.
"We are urging people to defend the democracy that cost us so much to get," Fobia guitarist Francisco Huidobro said.
"At last we can choose a president and Congress and it is our responsibility to make sure this carries on."
Mexico ended seven decades of one-party rule before the historical election of President Vicente Fox in 2000.
Census figures show that young people are the largest potential voting block in Mexico with 53 million of the nation's 107 million people age 18 to 34.
However, only about 60 percent of this group have registered to vote.
Campaign organizers say they hope to get another 7 million on board before July.
In midterm elections in 2003, only three out of 10 people age 18 to 30 voted, compared with nearly six out of every 10 citizens over the age of 50, according to election officials.
