Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. inspired many Americans for his acts against discrimination. Discrimination is when you are mistreated because of your race, or religion, like the African-Americans were. Discriminating not only affected blacks in many ways, but whites also. Even though there is always going to be discrimination, there are things we can do and things that are being done to prevent it.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader for African-Americans and wanted to stop the act of discrimination. He also started a revolution that would forever alter America. King thought that everyone should be created equal, and the color of your skin should not determine how you treat someone or are treated. In 1961, King said, that America was yet a dream unfulfilled. By this I think he meant that other countries saw America as a place to be free and a place where people could be treated equally, but the whites were discriminating against blacks. America had not yet evolved into what everyone thought it was and what it was supposed to be.
Discrimination is all around us and can affect everyone severely. In Martin Luther King's time, discrimination led to violence, and even death.
Discrimination affected African-Americans the most. Whites were also affected by the acts of discrimination; they were turned into cruel people just because they thought that they were better than the African-Americans. I assume that people discriminate because that is how their parents raised them. There is not as much discrimination as before, but it is not completely gone. Blacks are still discriminated against by whites. Today, discrimination typically leads to violence and can still cause death. In elementary school, there was a group of white kids that would not let my friends and me, who were mostly Mexican, play on the swings. They said that we were stupid just because we were Mexican. I was extremely upset that they talked to us like this because I knew that it was not reasonable to not let someone get on swings just because of their skin color.
To fight discrimination we can listen to what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was telling us. Everyone is a person and has feeling; no one should be treated differently because of his or her race, religion, gender or anything else. All we can to do help prevent the act of discrimination is to not do it ourselves, and to discourage anyone else doing it. Also, if you have younger brothers or sisters, you can be a role model and have a discussion with them about discrimination and let them know that it is an extremely awful thing to do.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. altered American history by being brave and standing up to the whites. Discrimination affected whites and blacks, and still does today. There are ways we can try to stop it like not discriminating ourselves, and talking to our younger siblings about discrimination and how wrong it is. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for what he believed: Everyone should be treated equal and skin color should not matter. We should all look up to King and do the same, stand up for our rights and our freedom.
