Shadegg may try for DeLay position

WASHINGTON — Arizona Rep. John Shadegg says he's mulling whether to jump into the race to replace embattled Majority Leader Tom DeLay. He said it's not an easy choice, but he believes the House needs an ethics overhaul.
"I've come to the conclusion we need significant change," Shadegg said Wednesday. "We need to look at the ethics scandals that plague the House and get aggressive about our own act and then get back to the agenda that brought us to the majority."
Shadegg, who has served in the House since 1994, said a number of House members have asked him to run for majority leader since DeLay announced he would relinquish the spot.
DeLay stepped down temporarily in September when he was indicted on charges of laundering campaign funds. He gave up hope of returning to the position Saturday after Arizona Rep. Jeff Flake and others circulated a petition calling for speedy leadership elections.
Missouri Rep. Roy Blunt, interim majority leader since September, and Ohio Rep. John Boehner are considered the leading candidates to replace DeLay.
