Super sevens

Boys basketball
1Sierra Vista Buena (10-1) Last week: 1 – The season is only three weeks old, and Buena has already beaten opponents by margins of 72, 48, 32, 22 and 20 points. Times are good in Sierra Vista.
2Sahuaro (7-2) LW: 2 – The presence of junior twins Chris and Brian Howard makes Sahuaro's inside game — anchored by Malcolm Shepherd and Kenny Lange — the most complete in town.
3Salpointe Catholic (5-4) LW: 3 — It's hard to tell which was more significant: Thursday's win over Rincon or Friday's one-point loss to defending 5A state champion Mesa Mountain View. Either way, the Lancers are a team to fear.
4Rincon/University (5-1) LW: 4 – The Rangers are unbeaten no longer after losing at Salpointe, but they still have as many quality wins as any team in Southern Arizona at this juncture.
5Amphitheater (10-2) LW: 5 – Even with scoring star Marwan Shehata sidelined, Amphi still hung with Rincon until the final quarter. That has to silence critics who thought the Panthers were one-dimensional.
6Tucson (5-1) LW: 7 – A puzzling home loss to Ironwood Ridge was remedied 24 hours later with a win on the road against always-potent Mesa Dobson. Up next is a tough test against Chandler Hamilton on Dec. 22.
7Sabino (7-1) LW: Not ranked - The Sabercats were blown out by 2A powerhouse Chandler Valley Christian at the Flagstaff Pepsi Tournament, but that was a hiccup in their otherwise flawless start to the season. — Tyler Hansen

1Nogales (9-0-1) Last week: 1 - The Apaches keep rolling as they gained two more wins this week. Nogales will have to do something special if it hopes to stay undefeated at the end of this week's Chris Maier Sabercat Invitational at Sabino.
2Salpointe Catholic (10-2) LW: 2 - Luis Lanz and Fernando Gauna led the Lancers to three wins this week, including an impressive showing against Catalina Foothills.
3Canyon del Oro (6-1-1) LW: 4 - The Dorados are playing some of the best soccer in the city right now and will try to become the first team to knock off Nogales on Thursday at the Maier Invitational.
4Mountain View (8-1) LW: 5 - After beating Foothills last week, Mountain View beat Rincon/University and Sabino. It may be early in the season, but the Lions have emerged as clearly one of the best teams in the city.
5Sabino (6-3) LW: 3 - The Sabercats lost a tough one to Mountain View but their attention now turns to the Maier Invitational, where Sabino will honor its former teammate.
6Catalina Foothills (3-3-2) LW: 7 - Foothills had a rough week, losing to Salpointe and drawing with Scottsdale Chaparral, but those are two of the best teams in the state. Foothills is still a threat, but needs to starting winning games.
7Rincon/University (4-3) LW: 6 - Rincon lost to a good Mountain View team but was able to beat Phoenix Moon Valley. The Rangers are a young team but remain dangerous if they can fix some of their defensive woes.

Girls basketball
1Flowing Wells (8-1) Last week: 1 - A physical style of play has continued to benefit the Caballeros who, after losing their first game, have won eight straight. They will take some time off before hosting their Holiday Shootout starting Dec. 27.
2Canyon del Oro (10-2) LW: 3 - The Dorados are averaging nearly 70 points a game this season and have posted scores of 80 or higher five times this season. But anyone who has seen this team play knows that it's the defense that helps spur the offense.
3Rincon/University (4-2) LW: 4 - It turns out that a No. 4 ranking wasn't too high for the Rangers. After a slow 1-2 start, the Rangers have won three straight games including what might be the biggest in years - a 74-68 win over Salpointe Catholic.
4Salpointe Catholic (1-3) LW: 2 - It wasn't the start Salpointe was looking for, but considering a tough schedule combined with some inexperience, this isn't too surprising. Now the Lancers have to beat Cienega before heading into the Nike Invitational over winter break.
5Sahuaro (8-2) LW: 5 - The Cougars continue to impress and will next be in action during the Flowing Wells Holiday Shootout.
6 Ironwood Ridge (4-1) LW: NR - Lindsey Miller could be one of Southern Arizona's top players and has at least been tops for the Nighthawks, averaging close to 15 points per game.
7Marana (5-0) LW: NR - The Tigers weren't going to be held out of the top seven for long. They ousted the previous No. 7 Catalina Foothills thanks to a 36-33 win over the Falcons last week. — Chris Davis
Girls soccer
1Catalina Foothills (12-0) Last week: 1 - Can anyone stop the Falcons? No team came close as the Falcons outscored opponents 24-3 to capture last week's Scottsdale Horizon Tournament of Champions.
2Flowing Wells (11-2) LW: 2 - The Caballeros can thank the Falcons for their two losses. The most recent loss was in the finals of the Horizon tournament. The loss ended Flowing Wells' eight-game win streak.
3Salpointe Catholic (8-2) LW: 3 - The Lancers' confidence can soar this week with a win over Catalina Foothills. Salpointe takes the easy wins, but needs to pull out the big victory Wednesday.
4Canyon del Oro (6-1) LW: 4 — The Dorados keep adding to the win column, but they have beaten two teams twice. Canyon del Oro can broaden its winning record if it can escape with a victory over Flowing Wells on Wednesday.
5Palo Verde (5-1-1) LW: Not ranked - The Titans have racked up five straight victories after suffering an early-season loss to Salpointe. The Titans have an off week as they prepare to host next week's Palo Verde Tournament.
6Tucson (6-2-1) LW: Not ranked - The Badgers' last victory was a 5-0 win over Amphitheater. The Badgers are hosting this week's Tucson Winter Champions Cup, and a win on their own turf will earn them credibility.
7Douglas (4-2) LW: 7 - The Bulldogs were at four consecutive wins before falling to Marana last week. Douglas has shown early that it will trade jabs with Palo Verde for the 4A Gila crown.
