About 250 members of the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association raised $33,000 to benefit five local charities at SAHBA's 11th annual Carnival de Golfe Charity Tournament at the Hilton El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort.
A recognition luncheon after the event was held at the Arizona Inn. A $10,000 check then was presented to the Critical Path Institute, which is establishing a high-tech research facility in Tucson to accelerate the development of medical products. Chief Operating Officer Larry Aldrich received the check from Anna Kane, carnival committee chair and SAHBA representative.
The remaining proceeds were divided among the Brandi Fenton Memorial Park, Hearth Foundation, Youth on Their Own and Habitat for Humanity. Each received $5,750.
The event's sponsors included A.F. Sterling Homes, Compass Bank, Cox Communications, Ducati Development Group and Knipp Brothers Industries.
Mark Yardy, Ryan Bale, Eric Shoberg, Sherry Young and Tom Doucette also attended.
Local nonprofits benefit from Sundt employees
Employees of Sundt Construction selected six Tucson-area nonprofit organizations to receive grants totaling $17,500 this quarter.
Grant money came from the Sundt Foundation, which was established as a way for Sundt employees to give back to the communities where they live and work.
The Family Counseling Agency of Tucson was awarded $3,000 to support family supervision services; Mobile Meals of Tucson received $3,000 to help with client meal costs for those who can't afford to pay the full cost of their special-diet home-delivered meals; and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Arizona was awarded $3,000 to fund the Adopt-a-Family program.
With its $2,000 grant, St. Andrew's Children's Clinic will buy used and new wheelchairs, walkers and strollers for children of indigent parents in Mexico; St. Elizabeth of Hungary Clinic will use its $4,000 toward a part-time dental hygienist to clean teeth of children who don't have insurance; and the Tucson Centers for Women and Children will use its $2,500 to replace damaged doors on the shelter's housing units.
St. Cyril's Fall Fair helps church and school
St. Cyril's Fall Fair raised nearly $25,000 for St. Cyril Parish ministries and school projects.
The fair, held Oct. 13-16, featured 10 rides, family games, homemade food and live entertainment.
More than 300 volunteers helped the fair go off without a hitch.
Fair chairperson Daren Lowry headed up the planning team, which included Don Coleman, John Devlin, Tracy Cracchiolo, Manuel Gadea, Oscar Garcia de Leon, Beth Hancock, Trish McCabe, Kim Samuels, Sally Guerrero, Dawn Scully, Principal Ann Zeches and Lee Tracy.
"The fair continues to be a wonderful event for our parish-school community and our neighborhood," said the Rev. Gil Martinez, pastor of St. Cyril Parish.
Finley Distributing Co. and Kalil Bottling assisted with beverages. Entertainment included the Lajkonik Polish Dancers, Salpointe Catholic High School student performers and the Catalina Foothills High School Steel Drum Band.
Diane Liotta and Leo Smith prepared Italian food, while Joy Paul served brownies in the Sugar Shack and Jorge Gramajo organized the Mexican food offerings. Peter Gariepy grilled up hamburgers and hot dogs, and Alice and Christopher Mullis prepared Indian fry bread.
The fair was presented in part by Oser Communications Group and Borderland Construction Co. More than 3,000 people attended the event.
Golf tournament raises $8,000 for local kids
The fifth annual Rand Ryan Gawthorpe Memorial Golf Tournament was held Oct. 28 at Del Lago Golf Course.
The benefit event, which was a four-person scramble, included free FootJoy golf shoes, a Callaway golf shirt for each participant, raffle prizes, awards and team photos.
The event is a tribute to Rand Gawthorpe, who died in 2001 at age 52. Gawthorpe is remembered in the construction industry for his charitable contributions, leadership style and friendship.
This year's recipients were the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson and the Arizona Daily Star Sportsmen's Fund Send-a-Kid-to-Camp program. The event's $8,000 proceeds will be evenly distributed between the two charities.
Among those who attended were Eva Martinez, Marc Stewart, Chuck Darone, Kip Volpe, Mike Aaker, Kris and Kimberly Gawthorpe, Jacque Humphreys, Tom Foust, Jim Riley, John Lundgren, Bill Smith, Ken Inskeep and Gary Hickey.
Jim Click hosts opening of new car-sales facility
Jim Click hosted the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 27 for his new dealership at East 22nd Street and South Wilmot Road.
Special guests included Steve Lyons, vice president of the Ford Motor Co. in Michigan.
The event was catered by Dakota Cafe. It featured tours of the new facility; a museum showcase of historic Ford automobiles; and a jazz band performance, which included musicians who were hurricane evacuees from New Orleans.
At the event, Click announced that he was donating a new Ford Escape hybrid (worth $32,000) to the local Seawater Foundation, a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to ecological balance.
Mayor Bob Walkup spoke at the event and proclaimed the week of Oct. 24 "Jim Click Week" in Tucson.
Among the nearly 500 who attended were Robert Salvatore, Richard Moret, Julee Dawson, Jason Fenwick and Steve Ochoa.
