SELLS — The Tohono O'odham Legislative Council on Thursday ousted one of its members after pronouncing him guilty of misconduct stemming from two alcohol-related convictions.
Councilman Dennis Jose, who represented the Sells District on the council for about eight years, did not make a statement on his own behalf.
Eighteen of the 22 members of the council, sitting as a court of removal, voted to find Jose guilty of "misconduct reflecting on the dignity and integrity of the Tohono O'odham government."
The council's decision came after listening to Tony Burrell, a San Xavier resident, make a case for Jose's removal. He lodged complaints with the council's judiciary committee based on Jose's two DUI offenses earlier this year. Burrell also informed the council that Sells District leaders and a community group previously had called on Jose to step down.
Tribal court documents show that in early September, Jose was fined $275 and given a suspended sentence for drinking and transporting beer on a part of the reservation where alcohol is illegal. Later that month, Jose pleaded guilty to a DUI charge in Tucson City Court. He was fined $974 and sentenced to three days in jail.
