Fans of sarcasm and those in need of a quick jolt of comedy are in luck.
"F Minus" debuts today in the Accent section and will run Mondays through Saturdays.
The single-panel comic, which has no recurring themes or characters, is the brainchild of Tempe native and Arizona State University graduate Tony Carrillo. According to Carrillo, the only constant is that the comic makes him laugh. "I always liked comics that got right to the point, ones that you didn't have to spend 10 minutes reading. Plus, you can't cheat and read the last panel first."
While earning his bachelor's degree in fine arts, Carrillo stuck to more realistic pieces until seeing an ad in ASU's newspaper for a comic artist. Even though he lacked experience, he needed a job.
"F Minus" made its debut in The State Press in January 2003 and ran for four semesters.
In 2004, the comic was chosen by judges and online voters as the winner of the 2004 MTVu Strips Contest. The award was a development deal with United Feature Syndicate, which signed Carrillo after the MTVu deal ended. A year later, "F Minus" began appearing on www.comics.com online. E-mails praising the strip came in from all over the world.
"I don't do any politics, I'm not trying to push any agenda, and I don't talk about pop culture. It's really about silliness. If I can make people laugh every day, that's good for me," Carrillo said.
